Browsing the web, this dialog box popped up warning about malware and wanting to scan my computer. Suspecting a threat from the warning itself (oh yes, I know they can be tricky), I made sure my Panda antivirus was running and let the dialog box do its thing. It loaded up this page (see screenshot) that looked a lot like the My Computer window, claimed to do a scan, and then had me download an executable attachment. That’s where I cut it off.

These malware threats are very sophisticated, and antivirus software will not necessarily protect you. This reinforces the importance of being suspicious of anything that happens in your web browser

This warning has come up several times over the last few weeks. I knew something was wrong when it started "scanning" my "system" and it looked not a thing like my system. Is there a way to prevent this page from appearing in the first place?

I’m going to keep an eye on my system and note what may prompt that page from loading, if it loads again. For the record, when it happened, I was viewing a perfectly innocuous page in the first tab (using Chrome) and loaded my browser’s history in a second tab, and that popup brought Chrome back to the first tab.

Edward, you say this has happened several times. I wonder if there’s an underlying virus/worm that is trying to download another virus…

The virus wouldn’t be on my system. It happens only when I go to a place called Deviant Art, and so far it happens to a random tab just when a comment is made. It has happened twice on this page: http://design-fatality.deviantart.com/art/Loose-Ended-123939958

Deviant art is where I got it, too

Not for me. It was a tv streaming site, watchtvsitcoms-dot-com.
